In an unprecedented development of the utmost gravity—indeed a first in the history of the Palestinian question and of the Middle East region as a whole—the United Nations, on Friday, officially declared a state of famine in the Gaza Strip.
What most arouses outrage and condemnation is that this fully ascertained state of famine is not compelled by force majeure; rather, it constitutes a deliberate political choice and the outcome of planning by the Israeli occupation. The proclaimed famine is in no way unrelated to the displacement project, to the project of reoccupation of Gaza, and still less to the so-called “Greater Israel” project.
Algeria condemns in the strongest terms these policies and practices imposed upon the Palestinian people, in the context of the genocidal war raging in Gaza, and calls upon the international community—particularly the United Nations Security Council—to discharge its responsibilities through the collective action required to nullify the “Greater Israel” project and to safeguard the viability of the two-State solution as the basis for any just, lasting, and definitive settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
As a member of the Security Council, Algeria reaffirms its commitment to continue its diplomatic efforts to support the Palestinian people, to work to end this unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, and to expedite the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
