In commemoration of our glorious history, the Embassy of Algeria in Windhoek observed today the 65th anniversary of the historic demonstrations of December 11, 1960.
The ceremony commenced with the raising of the national flag and a tribute to the souls of the Martyrs, followed by an address by His Excellency the Ambassador, Mr. Abdelkrim Dhiaf. He highlighted that the Algerian people's taking to the streets on that day was not spontaneous, but rather a "decisive uprising" to shatter the myth of "French Algeria" that the settlers attempted to impose, and to reaffirm the people's unwavering adherence to the choice of independence and to the National Liberation Front (FLN) as their sole legitimate representative.
His Excellency emphasized that the resonance of those chants transcended national borders, bringing about a pivotal shift in the course of the Revolution. Consequently, the Algerian cause was debated at the United Nations, thereby definitively nullifying all colonial wagers and maneuvers aimed at circumventing national sovereignty.
In conclusion, the Ambassador stressed that this anniversary must remain a guiding beacon for future generations and for members of our national community, from which to draw inspiration regarding the lessons of sacrifice and national unity.
